DENNIS? JRH?

I am no technowiz so what does this do to csco ??? Are they dragging their feet
getting into layer 3 ??

I hope I'm not an idiot for assuming that this was a real question - I'm just going to answer and hope nobody laughs too hard at me.

In Layer 3 Cisco RULES THE WORLD! Layer 3 = router, at least until very recently. As you know Cisco owns the router market. LU is a layer 2 company today.

Now there's layer 3 switching which is "newish". Is that what you folks are asking? The winners and losers in layer 3 switching are far from being rung out. Cisco is in the game as are a number of vendors...in fact way too many to mention. LU is certainly one as is Ascend, Bay, etc, and more start-up's than you can shake a stick at. Given the landscape, and relative strengths of the players I'd put my money on Cisco as the eventual winner with LU a close second. The others will get bought. BECAUSE:

As you pointed out Dennis. The company that wins the convergence battles (data/voice integration) wins the war. So the battle among the networkers has to be fought on multiple fronts. If a company can't do this they get bought or go away...... MO
