Actually I want a really cold autumn and winter to cool(?) their derrieres real good.

This is funny but in keeping with a particular mindset. If someone experiences a very cold winter, does that mean that they were wrong about global warming? I know there are some people who show snowballs to prove that the earth isn't dangerously warming, or point out that a glacier somewhere still exists.

In mathematics there are concepts like slope and acceleration which are also called first order and second order terms in an equation. There is also a "zeroth" order which is the constant in the equation.

When something is changing like the average temperature of the planet, it is only partially useful to indicate what the current average is, which is why people look at the changing sizes of glaciers around the world. Given the current change in a measurement (the slope), it is often useful to examine the second order changes to predict the future values. It's important to know if the acceleration is positive, negative or close to zero. With this information we have a good start to predict some future value. On the other hand, just looking at one of these values will not often give a good prediction of a future value.

I used to think that most people understood this concept, but after reading several of the last posts, I now doubt it.
