I think the mistake many are making worrying about 2020, is that as Rachel Beticore said the motivating factors have changed.

It is now Democrats against Republican. It doesn't matter who we run.

Think about it: The African American votes Democrat over 90% in every election, no matter who we run.

Not others over 90% but over 50%.

And, IMO, it is now with a majority of the people.

We can thank Trump for that.

Going forward the Republican party is toast. Trump has shown the dark underbelly of the Republican party.

Disagree. I don't think the Trump base sees Pence as an adequate substitute. Certainly the portions of his base that are white working class evangelicals would stick with Pence. I don't think that's enough of a base for a savvy campaign by either Kasich or Romney to hold them off in toto.
