It that is true, then how do you square this empirical recorded temperature data with the bull sh*t charts and scientology claiming we are experiencing the hottest weather ever recorded?

LoneClone - I totally agree with you that the scientific method is essential to the climate change discussion.

However the scientific method for climate studies requires consideration of data much longer than a 40 year period, it must also consider all of the causes for short and long term patterns in climate change.

Studies in physics, geology, and astronomy are remarkably consistent in attributing climate change to the position of solar system within the orbit around the milky way, the position of the earth's elliptical to circular orbit in relation to the sun, and the changing inclination of the rotational axis. As well, volcanic activity, glaciation, albedo... all contribute to climate change.

There is no doubt that fossil fuels are one of the contributing factors to climate change - as things as simple as jet contrails cause short term changes.

What is in doubt - as per application of the scientific method - is that this is a particularly warm period given temperatures over the past 10,000 years to millions of years or that it is anything more than just another interglacial warming period.

This is a controversial topic for many people as they don't want to be asked or told to "believe" that there is irrefutable certainty that climate change is occurring purely because of human action - or that this is a particularly warm period - the actual temperatures found during scientific investigation as in the following temperature graph based on scientific studies just doesn't show it.

I agree with you about the scientific method. There is no other way to approach science. It is not perfect, however. It is very much subject to abuse by way of proving, covertly, predetermined outcomes. It is also regularly abused in attemps to convince people of dusious findings by using polls of questionable composition citing what may be false or falsified studies.

The fact is, scientific findings should never be accepted as static, they should always be questioned, open to review. Change happens, or we would still be treating VD with mercury. By the way, did not some people once use "science" to prove the racial superiority of Arians? Did not "science" once believe that the insecticide DDT was not harmful to animal life?

Science should welcome divergent opinion. Otherwise having too much faith in it makes it a religion, no?

OT while we do not agree on every topic I share your views on religion and I believe in science, I know the earth is getting warmer as we see signs of it everywhere, I'm not yet totally convinced global warming is all man made although I agree its not helping polluting our air as much as we do, man has been walking on this earth for a short time while the earth is very old, I have not read any proven scientific evidence pointing to the man made conclusion but I'm keeping an open mind, the thing that bothers me is when I hear stories like the cows farts are hurting the planet so we should not eat meat, thats getting into wingnut territory for me.
