EU hails sacking of Ukraine’s prosecutor Viktor Shokin

Political crisis continues as deals on a new coalition and premier prove elusive

The European Union has welcomed the dismissal of Ukraine’s scandal-ridden prosecutor general and called for a crackdown on corruption, even as the country’s political crisis deepened over efforts to form a new ruling coalition and appoint a new prime minister.

Ukraine’s parliament voted overwhelmingly to fire Viktor Shokin, ridding the beleaguered prosecutor’s office of a figure who is accused of blocking major cases against allies and influential figures and stymying moves to root out graft.

“This decision creates an opportunity to make a fresh start in the prosecutor general’s office. I hope that the new prosecutor general will ensure that [his] office . . . becomes independent from political influence and pressure and enjoys public trust,” said Jan Tombinski, the EU’s envoy to Ukraine.

“There is still a lack of tangible results of investigations into serious cases . . . as well as investigations of high-level officials within the prosecutor general’s office,” he added.

Mr Tombinski said the EU was also concerned about the resignation or dismissal of several “reform-oriented” prosecutors and reports that Mr Shokin’s office was investigating a “highly-respected” anti-corruption group – an obvious reference to Kiev’s Anti-Corruption Action Centre, which had fiercely criticised Mr Shokin.

In what appeared to be his last act before dismissal, Mr Shokin sacked his deputy, Davit Sakvarelidze, who had repeatedly called for his boss to be fired.

Mr Sakvarelidze, a Georgian who was also chief prosecutor in the Odessa region, said his dismissal by Mr Shokin was part of “a cleansing of people who are prepared every day to fight corruption and the old guard without compromise”.

Crime and corruption Mikheil Saakashvili Russia“In this case, the president, as guarantor of the constitution, should express his opinion explicitly, clearly and sharply,” Mr Saakashvili said.

“And not because it will benefit any one of us, but for the sake of the statehood, integrity and glorious future of Ukraine.”

BOOM: In 2016 LETTER REPUBLICAN SENATORS WANTED THE UKRAINIAN PROSECUTOR FIRED TOO. AND SO DID THE EU.
By Alex Ward @AlexWardVox alex.ward@vox.com Oct 3, 2019, 9:30am PDT

Trump’s core argument against Joe Biden is that then-Vice President Biden improperly used the power of his office to get a Ukrainian general prosecutor fired in order to stop him from investigating a Ukrainian gas company that Biden’s son Hunter served on the board of.

The reality is that the Obama administration — as well as many other Western European officials — wanted the prosecutor, a man named Viktor Shokin, removed because he was believed to be trying to stymie anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine. In other words, if anything, Biden’s efforts could have put his son in more legal jeopardy, not less.

Yet the conspiracy theory persists and has been repeated by Trump’s Republican allies on Fox News and in Congress. But it turns out Republicans have failed to mention one important thing: At least three GOP senators at the time also wanted that Ukrainian prosecutor fired.

CNN uncovered a letter dated February 12, 2016, in which Sens. Rob Portman (R-OH), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Mark Kirk (R-IL), along with several Democratic senators, called for Ukraine’s then-president to “press ahead with urgent reforms to the Prosecutor General’s office and judiciary.” Four days later, Shokin resigned (although he didn’t officially leave until the following month when Ukraine’s Parliament voted him out).

In other words, both Republicans and Democrats in the US — and many European nations — wanted Shokin gone for failing to clamp down on graft.

The letter is a major blow to Trump’s argument that Biden somehow went rogue and tried to get Shokin fired to protect his son. Biden himself has been incredibly consistent on this point, saying he legitimately pushed for the prosecutor’s ouster with international backing and that he never spoke to his son about his Ukraine work.

Rather, it’s the Republicans who have changed their tune. Portman is backing President Donald Trump’s assertion that he didn’t withhold military aid for Ukraine in order to extract Kyiv’s help to investigate the Bidens. And Johnson signed a September 2019 letter asking Attorney General Bill Barr to look into possible Biden-Ukraine corruption.

What this all shows, then, is that the Trump-GOP campaign to paint Biden’s actions in Ukraine as corrupt are disingenuous and clearly partisan.

Portman and Johnson have yet to explain their about-face, and they didn’t respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Giuliani mocked in anonymous NYC subway ad: 'Need a lawyer? Call crazy Rudy.'
BY JUSTIN WISE - 10/03/19 08:40 AM EDT 566
thehill.com

A satirical advertisement that says "Need A Lawyer? Call Crazy Rudy" has been spotted on a New York City subway train.

The ad takes direct aim at President Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, and includes an image of the former New York mayor with a wide-eyed expression.

The satirical advertisement was first spotted on one of the city's subway trains Tuesday afternoon, according to the New York Daily News.

A photo of the blue-banner ad shows Giuliani alongside a list of legal services, which include "back-channel deals" and "cable news appearances."

The ad also declares that Giuliani "has no shame" and "will work for free!"

The website listed on the advertisement directs to a page that says the "law offices of Crazy Rudy Giuliani" are in Washington, D.C.

It is unclear who is behind the advertisement and website. Upon dialing a phone number listed on the site, a voicemail message says, “You’ve called the law offices of Crazy Rudy! We specialize in back-channel deals, cable news appearances and will work when drunk."

No one immediately returned The Hill's request for comment on the advertisement.

The ad's appearance in the New York City subway comes as Trump and Giuliani face increasing scrutiny regarding their interactions with Ukraine. A whistleblower complaint filed by an intelligence community official accuses Trump and Giuliani of a broad effort to pressure Ukrainian officials into investigating 2020 presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.

The revelations have lead to a formal impeachment inquiry of Trump in the House.

The House Intelligence Committee, chaired by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), on Monday issued a subpoena for Giuliani, requesting he hand over communications dealing with his efforts to pressure Ukrainian officials. Giuliani has not said whether he will comply with the request.

Leader McCarthy and Representative Michael McCaul Call-Out Democrat Manipulation of Committee Inquiry….
Posted on October 3, 2019 by sundance
Today both Minority House Leader Kevin McCarthy and Representative Michael McCaul draw attention to Speaker Pelosi’s manipulation of House rules specifically intended to achieve articles of impeachment without Republican representation.

In a blatant display of committee manipulation, today the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Chairman Adam Schiff, worked around committee jurisdiction rules and took a deposition from Kurt Volker, the former State Department Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations.

Not only was the jurisdiction of the House Foreign Affairs Committee usurped, but Chairman Schiff also limited republican members to having only one staffer present during the testimony. [ Read McCaul Letter Here] This blatant manipulation of House rules was made without Speaker Pelosi holding a House vote to initiate an impeachment inquiry.

The House Rules that Pelosi changed in 2018 were designed to exploit the Trump-Russia impeachment via obstruction goal. Those same changed rules are now being used in the Trump-Ukraine effort. The committees’ need to gather impeachment evidence without the pesky interference by House republicans. This was always the purpose for changing the rules.
