Later in that call, Clinton would praise Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s leadership. He told Blair the Russian leader had “enormous potential” and was “very smart and very thoughtful.” Unsurprisingly, there was no whistleblower in 2000. There was no media outrage. Clinton had already been impeached just two years earlier, after Ken Starr’s special counsel investigation concluded Clinton was guilty of obstruction of justice and lying under oath — which the special counsel investigation into President Donald Trump did not conclude. And Blair’s attempt to assist Gore’s presidential campaign ultimately failed — former President George W. Bush won his first term in office in an extremely close election.
