I used to live in the USA and my fav place was NH. I had house in Maine and the power went down regularly because... for some reason Americans carry their power above ground for distribution. In the UK it's all below ground apart from the main grid for the substations. In rural areas they have an above ground system I guess, but there are not many areas in the UK that are still "rural". Of course Maine and NH are covered in trees, no no big surprise, when a storm comes, a tree falls over somewhere and the power goes down. I lived in a nice area, but because schools hospitals etc had priority we would usually get back on line after three or more days. I therefore had a stove that could burn wood and coal for the very cold winters we got there, I also had a gasoline three phase generator. There is a switch-over unit that can be bought that switches out the Main Incomer (that what it's called in the UK) and switches in the home three phase generator at the same time. It just a matter of storing several gallons of gasoline in a safe are outside the home. These days I would have a solar & wind unit plus a diesel backup. At the moment I am living in a property that I am just a caretaker of. For some reason everyone bought wood for stove heat in Maine, even when lumber prices rocketed sky high. I would buy several tons Anthracite at a fraction of the cost and delivered to the basement by conveyor. Far superior then the hundred weight sack system that is still used in the UK. It's traditional male ego stuff I suspect -g-. In the UK, people who generate their own power supply, have switch mechanisms that sell power to the power company when they have an excess to deliver (and the power is not down and being repaired for whatever reason). The 11,000 volt stuff and below is all below ground in copper usually. We do use aluminium below ground too. elandcables.com I guess it would be a good time for California to upgrade the distribution system. Infrastructure upgrades would be a great way to get everyone working. There is the cost of course. That could easily be provided. Scrap the Federal Reserve monetary system... Put the government directly in control of the money supply. Scrap the IRS, and just make sure all money depreciates by 10% every year (or whatever) and call that "tax". That would pay for everything the government runs. Of course the USA super rich might have some objections and they would need to be negotiated with. Overseas investment might need some review, etc, but generally the idea would be get most people off welfare, and lets be honest, the super rich fall into that bracket as well. Tax dodging welfare queens of any income bracket is not a good thing. A lot of tax dudes and other people would be out of a job, but that's easy, just give em a shovel and start hand digging those trenches needing the underground cables. Don't buy any foreign digging equipment unless if from USA sources, as the USA manufacturing base needs to re invent itself. This would be a simple idea that would out Chinese China. Manual labor. I'm surprised none of those sharp cookies in Silicon Valley have not come up with a similar (or better) revolutionary idea themselves. That would help but the USA back where it should be... In the lead and showing the way forward. In the mean time we in the UK have Boris.... a big problem all by itself. At the moment his solution to everything ... including Brexit... is to buy the Royal Family two new super yachts. I am trying to fathom why that would be a good idea... but as yet cannot see why this would be a solution to anything.. Maybe if we get back some of that economic clout we had a few centuries ago ... that would be a good idea ... a streamlined Royal family would be good for foreign relation events etc. At the moment I think Boris needs to rethink the economic strategy of the nation. Or resign or something -g- Anyway, it's nearly 8 am here, I'm gonna go out and earn some money. Intelligent capitalism is where it's at. That is key. Yeah, even capitalism needs a government who represent the people. Catch you all later.. I lived in the North Bay for a while. Worked for the old grand daddy SV firms. I hear even those Billionaires who own the vineyards in Sonoma County etc like to keep a paying government job in case the Health bills get out of hand. There are always problems, but usually solutions too. Just gotta find them.
