I did so last night and thought I sent it but it only got to the PREVIEW stage and in my tired stupor I thought that was sent and I shut my computer down and lost the post. You are correct, I am not at sea level, Calgary is 3000 feet above sea level and it certainly affects our growing season. You just described the "Grand Solar Minimum". I went to that link and viewed the video for 5 minutes before closing it as the discussion in it is meaningless to me. To say that Global Warming is a hoax is ludicrous. I don't know about New Zealand's glaciers but Canada's glaciers are in rapid retreat over the decades. To educate myself I looked up the status of New Zealand glaciers and this is what I foundNew Zealand glaciers have been retreating since 1890, with an acceleration of this retreat since 1920. ... The retreat of these glaciers has been marked by expanding proglacial lakes and terminus region thinning. The loss in volume from 1975–2005 is 11 percent of the total. The video on your site link said the glaciers were growing.... someone is lying and I doubt it is these researchers Decline of New Zealand Glaciers You can see for yourself from this video the degradation of the New Zealand glaciers Here is a recent article from the Moscow Times... You do know that ships can sail completely around the northern shores of Russia. We cannot do that in Northern Canada...yet... but we are getting close.... so close that your USA is taking notice and wants to control that North West passage, along with Russia, disputing Canada's claim to the islands in Northern Canada that have been considered Canada's for hundreds of years.... that is until the melting made a real Northwest passage possible.....another irritant between Canada, USA and Russia Local to my neck of the woods... Maybe you remember Lake Louise, in Banff, Alberta. from old movies. The glacier at the end of the lake has all but disappeared. Here is a picture of the Athabaska Glacier which is part of the Columbia Icefields that provides the water to major Canadian rivers across, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. This marker is placed at the edge of the glacier in 2000.... look at how far this glacier has retreated. I am not sure when this photo was taken but that is at least in 18 years.... the ice thickness in the year 2000 was over 40 feet thick, sometimes as much as 70 feet thick. Those circles show people for reference. Myself, I visited this glacier twice...once in 1995 and again in 2005... In that ten year period the glacier had retreated the equivalent of 2 football fields. this picture shows a 100 year retreat of this glacier Current measurements put the rate of retreat of this glacier at 16.4 feet/year. ........................................................................................................................ The warming of Canada's north is not a great benefit.... Yes waterways are opening that were never open before. But most of the Northwest Territories are permafrost tundra. That permafrost is melting now. Small towns in the Artic like Inuvik have difficulty now since the foundation of their buildings are melting... The whole area of the north will become a boggy soup, releasing tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The warming will cause a lot of problems with infrastructure in that area of Canada. The wildlife in the area will have to adapt somehow of die....polar bears live on the ice, they are not generally land animals, they hunt seals but cannot do so without ice. You find polar bears increasingly moving inland but without seals their normal prey they are starving. How about the cold weather extremes in the USA east. Climate Change, Frigid Temperatures and the Polar Vortex The Arctic is warming two to three times as fast as the global average. Scientists say warmer air temperatures in the Arctic can weaken the polar jet stream, a west-to-east river of wind where cold Arctic air meets milder subtropical air in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. A strong jet stream typically traps the polar vortex over the Arctic, but when it’s weakened, the cold air can stray southward into the United States.wri.org . Believe it or not... you are getting more snow than we do in Canada. In Calgary, despite a small snow storm that comes and melts in a few days in the months leading to January, we have had several "brown" Christmases in the last decade. It is a myth that the further north you go the more snow falls. It requires moist air to produce snow. when that polar vortex crawls down to Florida and Texas the cold dry air meets warm moist air and tons of snow is produced. Your are probably getting better at coping with it now... those storms are only a nuisance to us here. The drought in California and wildfires spawned in recent years are not caused by the state not raking up the deadfall in the forest as was laughably suggested by a federal government official. The drought is the climate problem.... the same issues affect Australia. In Calgary, my soil at my former house was only 6"-10" thick after that it is mostly gravel. Actually the prairie of southern Alberta has very little depth of soil....If it were not for irrigation there would be little to prevent the area turning into a desert...That comes back to our dependence on water in our mountains. If the glaciers disappear and we have about 5 years of drought this whole areas could turn to desert. Is climate change due to man?? Well that is moot. Much of it is probably normal geological climate change through the millennia.BUT MAN HAS HAD HUGE INFLUENCES ON THE EARTH WITH TIME. Europe is almost denuded of forest over the centuries. Now we have that yo-yo in Brazil letting the rain forest (a lung of the planet) to be burned off... what a stupid idea Remember in the 1990's the scare that the ozone layer was developing a whole. This layer in the atmosphere protects us from harsh sun rays. That whole was widening, though there were many that denied this was happening or was serious. The cause through science investigation was found due to chlorofluro hydrocarbons used in refrigeration, air conditioning and fire protection systems among other processes was the cause of ozone depletion in the atmosphere. Thankfully the world listened to this science and banned the use of these chemicals. Now 20 years later the ozone layer has been brought back to normal, man caused a problem man through science fixed it. As I said, to deny and do nothing about the change of climate in the world is stupid. Imagine the consequences of the world oceans rising 3 or more feet due to polar ice melting....island nations could disappear, river will rise, more flooding will happen, drought and other issues with climate increase. To sit back and do nothing is not helping. Even small things like replanting trees to rebuild the lungs of the earth eventually may have good effect. Climate Change and Global warming are a fact of today's and future's life. The world should recognize this and start working together to reduce it's effect...instead of planning physical and trade wars around the world Now let us get back to trading .... my rant is over. UE
