I'm enjoying this discussion of the climate - the issue has gotten very politicized, and it seems as though your beliefs have to fall within your party lines...true story, my neighbor and I were taking our garbage out at the same time. He basically told him I was silly for paying for an additional fee for a recycling can, as global warming was a hoax. Out of respect for his age and the fact that we are neighbors, I didn't correct him that recycling and global warming are 2 distinct issues. It made me sad, though, that he couldn't be bothered to separate his trash because of all the hysteria around both sides. I continue to believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle...

Anyway, nice to see 2 diverging points brought up.

DIS: I suppose we can talk a bit more on Global Warming and Climate Change as long as it remains respectful and does not dominate this STOCK CHARTING thread for a long time

We have had zero to 1 or 2 sun spots / day since Jan of this year . You can see them on a daily basis here at spaceweather.com

A Russian Grandmother at an English University has figured out what the sun is telling us and how it does it , Vanentina Zharkova .

She would disagree and say we are going to have global cooling , it is starting this year .

I am skeptical about the sun spot theory as being a predictor of Global temperature

Here is a prediction of Global Temperature on the basis of sunspot activity done in 2013

Here is the temperature trend up to 2018

I think the sunspot prediction has missed the mark in this comparison

The anomaly numbers on the right of the last chart vary from presenter to presenter... this is because each presenter has a different reference point for zero.... but the trend is always the same. They use temperature anomaly since the temperature measurement are made at many locations with many normal temperatures. what they report is the difference between the normals and actuals now... this gives a better comparison.

What I find interesting is the dramatic rise in Global temperature after 1900. Is this a coincidence that the industrial revolution was now in full swing by that time???? I doubt it is coincidence.

The earth is dynamic... it is not a stationary top spinning in space. So I can imagine that this spinning/tilt of the earth has a cycle to it and this could be the cause of earth's climate change.

But what about something that may be in the control of man

Greenhouse gas emissions - ie CO2

You can see that the level of CO2 in the atmosphere has NEVER been as high as it is today for the last 800,00 years... and it is still climbing

Here is a 100year blowup from another site

It is pretty clear to me that the rise of CO2 and earth temperature really accelerated at the turn of the 20th century which is the real start of the industrial revolution.

Man caused this rise in CO2...industrialization is the cause. If we can get the world to reduce CO2 emissions then we will go a long way to reducing global warming

There are many ways to reduce CO2 emissions...

1. Stop denuding the earth of its lungs (forests) Some governments are embarking on a tree planting campaign...not a bad idea. Brazil should be ashamed of themselves for allowing rain forest to be burned like what is happening now.

2. Produce energy in a non-thermal way...ie. use wind/solar power more (nuclear power does not emit CO2 but the process of refining its fuel does...also issues of waste disposal have never really been solved)

3. Reduce carbon fuels in cars... Not going to happen overnight but could happen

4. carbon capture of emissions... a concept that needs a lot of science/engineering work.

I am certain there are more approaches.

Conclusion

To say there is no such thing as global warming/climate change is a head-in-the-sand mentality. The problems are accelerating not diminishing.

we solved the OZONE depletion problem by banning chlorofluorocarbon use... it worked...science worked!!!
It will take Science and Engineering to attack the problem and develop measures to mitigate climate change effects.
