am wondering how Maurice feels about (a) wars that kill, over extended periods of decades, at great cost, and / or (b) betraying allies a the flick of a tweet..

Long wars are not as numerous as shorter conflicts. The fact remains that waring factions will continue to
fight until the end of history. Frighting is part of our DNA. Call it Darwinian if you please. World peace is rarely observed, maybe never. Divorce rates in civilized countries is testament to this fact.
In the animal kingdom it is and continues to be survival of the fittest.

Allies are expendable when one's existence is involved.

And so it goes.....

You're in luck TJ. China remains world champion in deliberately dead people. USA has taken part in some good efforts but not as instigator generally.

While USA was gearing up in Vietnam, Mao's Maelstrom put paid to hordes. Win to China. Since then USA has made some reasonable efforts but have not been able to get to the million mark.

Heck, just the Rwandans with machetes achieved more. The Moslems, Serbs and whatnot in Yugoslavia did well.

Iraq was quite a mess but Saddam and Iran achieved much higher scoring in their early 1980s war.

Syria has been a big mess but not so much in actual deaths.

The USA invasion of Syria was poor form as Assad did not invite them. But given the mess and ISIS it was reasonable hot pursuit of those hideous barbarians. Leaving is good. It's not abandoning allies as in Kurds. Having joined forces to defeat ISIS horrors does not confer an obligation to stay on the help Kurds carve out a piece of Syria, Iraq and Turkey to make a new country, though doing so would be reasonable.

Syria can ask Russia to help evict Turkey from Syria if they like. Or maybe Iran would help.

China in Tibet, Uighurland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Korea = plenty of dead already done and plenty more threatened including right now in Hong Kong if Hong Kong people don't abandon their English common law, freedom type thinking and start goose stepping and bowing to Beijing and Emperor Pooh Xi.

South Park commentary. Probably illegal to view in Hong Kong.

As I explained, USA is merely less bad than China.

At the rate the 21st century is going by, I think it will be the 22nd before my kind of progress is making headway.

Parades can be entertainment but that wasn't what was going on. Same as the old USSR Red Square parades. Not really fun though taking part could be enjoyable I guess. Unless the bosses order to start shooting which is all those weapons are good for.
