1 Communist party of China wants to keep HK because they do not tolerate dissent. It will give a bad example for the mainland provinces.

Moot point ... and too simplistic... They have far more to lose by beating down HK...

2 Hong Kong is China's ATM. They use been using it as a mechanism for financial transactions.

Think about that... Much closer to true and makes your 1) so terribly unlikely

The HK protesters are saying: "We don't need Mainland".
The communist party of China is saying "We need HK"

I do not see this following from your assertions taken as a pair.. but yes... and HK is wrong... China needs HK.. that is what I have said.. the world does not.. they have Singapore :) HKers thinking they have support of so called free world are so terribly naive.. it astounds me... If they gain independence from China.. they have ZERO value to the world.. OK not ZERO... but 1 to some HUGE negative exponent :))

Now I need to make some popcorn and watch how foolish (or NOT) the Canadian electorate will be....

I am truly hoping for a certain How the Hell did that happen moment... although there are a couple of possibilities.. all equally WTF moments:)
