Gas went from 32 cents to over a buck,

I got in trouble for 'borrowing' gas from a car. It was sunday and all stations were ordered closed and my tank was very low.

I couple of years later I joined a startup company making gas pump displays. None of the gas pumps could calculate or display a price greater than a buck, and those old displays were mechanical monsters of many gears and pulleys and rods. We sold digital replacements. Later we tied them to cash registers. Later we added credit card readers (which were the very first customer operated gizmos that accepted credit cards in the US).

Those were pivotal years in my life.
