In New York, independents can't vote in either primary.
In MA, we are called unenrolled and can vote in any primary. I voted for Bernie last time. Unless you want to hold a party office, there is little reason to join.

Many years ago, I lived in PA and only party members could vote in primary. In 72, I somehow was a member of both! No idea how that happened.
