Tests have consistently shown that Americans are misguided and misinformed about how well their views are represented by their politicians. One example of the test goes like this: You are to immigrate to a new country. You have no idea what socio-economic position you will hold once you get there (it will be randomly assigned and then you can move up or down from that position based on your work). What is the income/wealth distribution of the country you'd want to migrate to. Then the people are given 20 or 30 points to distribute across the five levels of the society.

While nobody chooses a uniform distribution, none choose extreme divergence either. The result of this "ideal" society survey by both Republicans and Democrats consistently falls to the left of DNC platforms.

In another version of the survey they ask how much should the CEO make relative to the line workers. Typical answers range from 30x - 60x. In reality the average CEO makes 271x more than his workers.
