Sandie,

John's comments seem to me to be based on concerns, observations and frustrations that are nothing new, and have been shared by many of us for some time. I'm sure that there are many shareholders, like me, that have been trading e-mails with management re: the situation and have not posted them here so as to preserve some confidentiality.

From what I know of it, sourced from conference calls, annual reports, etc., I still like the business plan. One of my concerns is that I do not think that management gives near enough concern to the effective use of advertising, IR or PR to position itself positively. There's a big difference between hype, which I am not advocating, and no news. The market takes no news as bad news. It negatively affects investor confidence (share price), anylists' projections, clients' perceptions (willingness to hire), bankers' cofidence (availability and cost of debt financing) and a host of others. I know that it sounds cold to some, but the goal of any corporation is to increase shareholder wealth. Period. At this point, I one again can devine only two reasons why management is not adequately steering the public face of the company. Either they do not share my view of its importance, which I believe to be the case, or they can't perform on anything.

Business here precludes my going to SHM, but if the company is still fundamentally on the right track, they have to do a better job of communicating that to the market, clients, bankers, competitors, et al. As unforgiving as we see the market now so far as valuation is concerned, things can and probably will get worse steadily as Asian economies come unraveled and Fed keeps monetizing. Paying attention to this part of the business is ultimately every bit as important as fixing a factory floor. Time now to climb down from my soapbox. Best to all, and hopeful for positive SHM.
