With regard to the defeat of the Germans in North Africa one has to take into account Bletchley Park, situated in Milton Keynes in the United Kingdom, where teams of code breakers were reading most of the communications between Rommel and his supply depots in Southern Italy.

The British had broken the German coding system of their Enigma machines. So when Rommel called for fuel or military equipment to be sent to him from Sicily, the British were listening in and their submarines were dispatched to blow the supply vessel out of the water. To quite a large extent Rommel was "starved" out of the war.

When Montgomery entered the North African campaign the USA had just entered that part of the conflict. That meant that Montgomery could now rely on large amounts of military equipment, especially US tanks. Montgomery beat Rommel's forces mainly because he built up a vastly larger force that was up against a vastly depleted enemy deprived of resources due to the fact that their supply line from southern Italy was cut off.
