BC would have to negotiate moving any natural gas across Alberta, and imports by road or rail to the east, and that is just for starters. Canada would have to negotiate flying over Alberta, and road and rail transport across Alberta. Remember that 40-50% of oil used by Quebec comes from Alberta, and that 80-100% of BC's gasoline and diesel comes from Alberta. As an independent country, Alberta would have complete jurisdiction over this and in a far better bargaining position, both politically and economically. There would be an initial $20 billion in savings not having to make equalization payments alone. Then there are the federal taxes that could remain in Alberta. Combined, this would go a long ways to paying for Alberta police, pensions, gov't services, border control etc. The construction boom and ongoing expenditures from all the embassies build in Alberta would be a big plus too. Exactly what does Canada provide to Albertans, other than sneers and contempt? As for Premier Kenney's bs, Albertans know full well that Quebec will never cede any of its power or renegotiate equalization, as under the constitution, as Justin Trudeau himself has stated "Canada belongs to Quebec". If there was to be separation. The west would be a new country it could and would have it's own constitution where the Fed sector of the country Could & would over rule state or provincial interest should it tend to block or be disingenuous the common good of the of the combined states. The Constitution as we know it presently with all it's hangups & inadequacies perhaps may no longer exist. The present individuality of province does not even allow for free trade between the participants which make up Canada. There is freer trade with many foreign countries than there is between Provinces. To me that does not sound like an actual country which is supposed to work for the common good of all , in the first place. So what is there to really protect ?
