IMHO, looking at immigration for example.

Democrats and liberals tend to be skewed toward altruism. Helping the poor, helping the stranger who looks or sounds different. (Once in a while the kindness is misplaced and an asshole gets helped -- and it is promoted as the common occurrence, by the RW.)

Republicans and general RW folks tend to be sociopathic; and they believe theirs is a form of tough love. They don't want anyone outside their demographic circle "on their lawn" or in the USA; except the gardener/house-cleaner who discreetly works his/her ass off for lower costs and risks to the them. "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Quiet!!"

  • An altruist fills water jugs and bottles and leaves them in deserts where immigrants might flow into the US, to save these fellow humans from dying.
  • The sociopath literally follows the altruists and empties the bottles. It happens. They rationalize this it will deter people and thus save more lives-- and the nation from mooches, drug smugglers, rapists, diseased scary people and terrorism too. This is what they call "patriotic."

REALITY: The majority of people don't know ANYTHING about the deserts or the families dying there. They don't have friends or family who do not speak English. They are consumed and medicated by... consuming. HOWEVER, they want cheap nannies, roofs, house painters and lettuce. They don't know the definition and process of asylum, and have forgotten the "Christian" ideals about strangers. THEY JUST BELIEVE WHAT THEY HEAR FROM THE LOUDEST AND MOST POWERFUL MEME SELLERS ON THE RADIO, TV OR FACEBOOK. This inaction, especially in the red states, is why Trump and McConnell are still controlling things.

Also, I believe what side you are on is determined by actions, not words. In earlier generations, the average Republicans were more moderate - only the fringe were white christian nationalists and sociopaths. While the booming far left promoted deep state conspiracies and attacked the media, and did not support global trade or unfettered immigration. The moderate Republican mode changed after Ike, then the Civil Rights Act and Watergate.
