In contrast, there appeared to be a linear improvement of about 1 standard deviation in various attributes of mental health over the same life period-- one might conclude that as cognitive functioning decreases, one's mental health improves... which rhymes with the folksy knowledge that ignorance is bliss. an important variable that is not mentioned in the abstract is pharmaceutical treatment for depression, anxiety, and pain. old folks may just be on lots of drugs (per medicare) to mask their discomfort.
