I see the NYT now offers a "Free" account. They ask for an EMAIL address and to enter a password (no credit card). I have a junk email account I could give them. Wonder what the downside would be to creating one.
Don't know what they do in actual fact, but:

They can claim more unique readers and thus charge advertisers more -
and whatever other benefit there is for larger readership on the web.

Yes, a way to charge is number of ad views (and clicks) - but one person could view the same ads.
Unique viewers are a more significant statistic.

If nothing else, "prestige".
