John,

I believe your assesment of xDSL and routers/switches is accurate. xDSL is an access technology - like a modem. We could go into technology here but it appears this thread isn't that technically savvy- consider xDSL a from of really fast modem. You would typically connect your router or switch to a modem, CSU,DSU (digital modem), cable modem, etc., or now xDSL if you choose.

Access costs for xDSL are still fairly high so the up-tick is going be somewhat dependent on carriers lowing access charges. I've heard anywhere from $100 - $200 a month for ADSL today. So for most home users it's a bit pricey compared to 56K (O.K. really 52K) techology at $20 a month even though it's about 30 times fast at downloading files and internet pages!

As for Cisco; you're correct. These technologies are mutually exclusive for the most part. Purchasing xDSL does not eliminate the need for a router, switch, mux, etc.. However on the upside, businesses installing xDSL may budget for network upgrades as well. Many businesses tend to do network upgrades as a singe effort rather than repeated changes. IS Managers MAY ask for budget to do both the WAN upgrade and a router upgrade meaning xDSL up-tick COULD help router/switch vendors...but certainly not impact it in anyway.

John - SBC sounds like a bunch of clowns to me. If they said this on the heals of a downgrade which they didn't explain... They don't sound like a firm I'd be paying much attention to... at least in technology anyway.
