I remember very well; I was just graduated and had my first full-time job as a research assistant in an environmental lab in Annapolis. At the same time the recession hit, our parent company (a major defense contractor and multinational land rapist) lost 3/4 of its stock value overnight due to a truly boneheaded management deal with the Russkis. Although our lab was making lots of money and good will for the parent company and was very low-cost, they shut us down and laid a bunch of principal researchers off; we found out later that it was because of the research we were doing in PCB pollution.

Nixon was a slime, but he had assembled a world-class Cabinet and during his terms most of the truly effective environmental protection legislation was passed. I was very politically and economically aware; far more than I am now. Course, back then I had not developed the degree of cynicism I now possess.
