Compaq Acknowledges ADSL Plans
by Brian McWilliams, PC World News Radio
January 22, 1998

Compaq Computer on Thursday confirmed that it will offer ADSL access with future PCs. Earlier this week, Compaq, Intel, and Microsoft announced their support for ADSL, and the three are expected to announce an alliance next week at ComNet, a communications industry conference.

The company said it is testing modems and network interface cards provided by Ameritech, with hopes that the partners will be able to offer ADSL service to Compaq Presario buyers in some parts of Michigan later this year.

The technology will allow Presario owners to use existing telephone wiring to access the Internet at downstream speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second. ADSL requires telephone companies to install new hardware at central exchanges, but not at the user's site. Widespread support for ADSL by the PC industry is expected to push telecom companies to speed up ADSL deployment.
