Because we have closed primaries - I registered Republican so I could vote and potentially select the person whom Democrats might lose to in the General Election.
I worked this out with game theory - it is the only way that the popularity contest of the Democrats in the Primary actually means anything when I voted - to vote for an R gave me SOME voice should the chosen Democratic candidate lose. Because California voted so late - the Democratic leader was usually established. With the Primary moved earlier - I need to re-evaluate my payout matrix.

I wish we had open Primaries like Washington state.
