Veterans day seems almost like Xmas everyone tries to out do themselves with sale and free items like most holidays they really seem to forget the meaning of the holiday.

If people really cared spend the day a VA hospital and not on Veterans day or help in cleaning a Vet cemetery and stop thinking that putting things on sale for Vets to make yourself feel better.

Yes, I understand it is very difficult for some who have returned from war to accept gratitude, especially from Vietnam. Just watched a program on local news about it yesterday, in fact.

If someone makes it clear to me they wan no recognition for their time in the military, in Vietnam, whatever, then of course I would respect that decision.

Before reading your message to me, I had literally just gotten off the phone with my stepfather who served in the U.S. Navy, including during Vietnam, to thank him for his service. He said, "Well, thanks, I never know what to do with that. It was just my duty."

My point to him was that yes, I guess if we had a military draft and nearly everyone served, all men and women of age, then it probably wouldn't be a big deal.

However, we don't, and he put himself in harm's way by flying missions during Vietnam, it was his choice to go, he didn't run from the draft or move to Canada, which were options others took.

For that, I thank him and will continue to do so every Veteran's Day.
