It is a democracy maximizing strategy given a stacked deck where the largest economy gets almost no say in who becomes president. We should always act rationally - if not given a choice in the normal mode, we need to get the choice we can get.

I shouldn't have to act ironically - and in fact I should be able to vote for both my choice for R and D in the booth on the primary and election day keep the one I like. THAT is NOT democracy : parties get more say than the public and force us to choose camps.
