Everyone at the studio was very impressed with Earp even in his mid 70's at the time... Mayer and his wife became very good friends with Earp and his wife, the four of them went to each other's house for dinners and out to restaurants together... Mayer and his wife were young and the Earps were in their mid 70's but they became very close friends...

Earp was a bigger than life kind of guy and before John Wayne took on the stage name he was actually working in the props department... when Earp wasn't around, Wayne would walk around doing his impersonation of Earp with his swaggering walk and swaggering talk, it was all done in fondness and respect of Earp...

So, by the time Wayne got his first acting role, he already had the Earp persona down pat and this is what we see on the screen in all Wayne's films, we see the Earp character...

It really is a beautiful story and also in many ways heartwarming... Wayne's admiration of Earp was Wayne's inspiration all throughout his acting career... and we have Wyatt Earp to thank for the character Wayne always portrayed on the screen...
