And I am saying that in the 80s when I was in Quebec, there was no notion of "Gee, there are far fewer English now than before and we the French are doing great." Rather it was the notion that they used to one of two founding nations and were fighting the English to keep our identity, and now, not only we are surrounded by all sides by English (including a lot from the US), but now we are not special at all because we are one of many languages and cultures in Canada.

So if the idea was to strengthen the French against the English, it did not work at all.
