Saw this in an Aware press release from 1/21 titled "Aware is First to Demonstrate a Splitterless Version of DMT DSL Technology Suitable for PC Modem Applications":

"Tom Starr of Ameritech noted: Though our initial service deployments will be based on conventional ADSL configurations, we have a strong interest in the idea of splitterless ADSL. Simplifying our installation and making it easy for our customers to get the benefits
of higher speed services will facilitate wide-scale deployment. We are particularly interested in seeing 'lite' solutions that are interoperable with full-speed ADSL systems."

Two of the most important items in the WSJ article were that

1) the group includes Microsoft, Compaq, Intel, GTE, and 4 Baby Bells
and
2) they want something on store shelves before Christmas

Could it be that the simplified installation of splitterless ADSL is what will allow the RBOC's to provide infrastructure by December? Sure sounds like Compaq will have the Presarios out later this year with ADSL capability...

Maybe all of the naysayers who think this won't happen before the end of '98 will be surprised (they'll probably go long at 20-25 by which time I will have already made %100 return on my investment!).

Can't wait 'til next week's announcements!
