International Broadcasting Bureau (USIA/IBB) is seeking sources capable of
broadcasting worldwide by direct broadcast satellite. The requirement includes
broadcasting radio programs and multimedia (audio, video, data and text)
directly to stationary and mobile receivers for consumer audiences, where the
receivers are transportable and may be located in automobiles, offices or
residences. The sources must be capable of transmitting to an installed base of
consumer receivers using variable data-rates permitting up to and including CD
quality audio delivery. IBB intends to evaluate these sources to determine
their feasibility of/for broadcasting programming worldwide. Sources having
this capability should submit, by 5:00pm, February 27, 1998, a Technical and
Business Statement of Capability to Mr. Edward G. Muller, Agency Procurement
Executive, 301 4th St., S.W. Rm. M-22, Washington, DC 20547.

Lucent's CEO & Chairman was on CNBC the other day and he mentioned that Bell Labs invented one of the first MPEG-2 chips. i just assumed that meant Lucent had its own solution. Lucent's CEO did indicate that they would be involved in set top boxes and inferred that there would be an announcement shortly.

I think that there is some question as to whether CUBE will participate in the pending big deals in set top boxes; and this may be part of the reason the stock is down today.

It could be that CUBE is close to making a deal as far as set top boxes are concerned an Alex did not want to jinks the deal by mentioning it.
