The German Shepherd I grew up with never had a taste of dog food during his entire life. My mother used to cook for him. It was basically a whole chicken (including the innards) with rice and some veggies. I remember coming home from school "mmm, that smells good, what's for dinner?". The reply was usually "it's for Rex". He lived a long and healthy life. I firmly believe the issues we have with pet food is all the additives and preservatives they put in.
