They are cutting everywhere they can, and I believe that this includes R&D. The Japanese chipmakers announced that they would cut production by 10% The Koreans will cut their purchase of semi production equipment significantly this year. I suspect that everyone is trying to protect their "critical" R&D. Some of the best and brightest R&D guys are getting fed up with the situation and are going to universities, the U.S., or other companies. Most of this is in Semi Business News..............

If you can buy an MPEG2 chip, then why spend on the R&D?

Very good point. Maybe other Asian conglomerates are thinking like this. Otherwise we can spread the word. Hey, anybody at Matsushita and others spread this message.
