Alexa-What you wrote seems to be a perfect definition of myth by Campbell's standards. I got out my Power of Myth this morning while everyone slept-and came across this note to myself: Myth relates you to nature and the natural world as it links you to society. Is the problem then that we no longer accept our natural selves as healthy and we attempt to control each other with shame and guilt, denying and condemning that other self? (Back to poor Kate) And that this separation of selves -this severing of the link- has left us with no resolution for the conflict? So we end up not just with individuals losing control but because there is no longer some common accepted myth sustaining and guiding us and resolving that conflict, no positive way to integrate the selves, we are all lost as to how to deal with the chaos that results...as seems to be the case this week.. THe obsession with the minutiae of it all, as if in sifting through each fact we might understand the meaning of it-I think is fascinating. Or are we just obsessed with the sordid? It all feels like the OJ or Di experiences. Unhealthy somehow. Or is this very process the way the link must be forged now since our myths are failing us? Is this making any sense at all? All this babbling is because I really, really don't want to make meatballs and dips and desserts and if I don't what are people going to eat today? And my reputation as Hostess Extraordinaire will be shot..Although those grape meatballs last year may have accomplished that anyway. Enjoy the day. Since we cannot change reality, let us change the eyes with which we see reality. ??? dunno who said it-I just remembered it because I liked it-
