How do I live in Plato's cave, exactly? I don't think there is any one perfect form, of anything. I personally believe there are many ways to arrive at personal discovery and truth (and truth is relative, not sure there is any universal truth as we are all individuals.) True believer's can fixate upon anything, although Hoffer was primarily speaking of religious and political ones. But I think we can apply the term to anyone who is not willing to examine his beliefs, even the most cherished ones, in the light of fresh evidence. Irrational belief, I guess, is what I deem fundamental in a true believer.
