The advice I got early on at the get-go from more experienced friends was essentially that:

There are three bombs in life
1. Governmental authorities
2. Partners and creditors
3. Spouse and near-spouse

The third varieties tend to be nuclear in nature

I got married at age 37, later than many.

Would say the above advice is sound.

Not so difficult if you had a mother you didn't love all that much and/or visa versa.
Not every one is blessed with good parents.
Me: married 41 years - same woman - 6 kids and soon 13 grandkids.
(two sons available for marriage)

My wife is a wonderful woman/wife/mother/grandmother
My mother, not so much.

Even harder to do these days when son lives at home forever, Mommy coddles and looks after all his needs. Dad splits fire wood and hits the gym in frustration.
