OK_I ADMIT IT--COLOR ME PENNI PRUDE Tonight we saw Ammo have one of those nights that all boys need at least once in their lives. And I'm writing about it because I am truly tired of reading posts and hearing radio programs about garbage which are as tasteless as the act they purport to criticise. Doesn't anyone have the reaction I do to this? That when people comport themselves in a manner not befitting their position, in a way that's degrading to everyone around them, we should hold ourselves slightly aloof, grant some space to a situation- not to condone, but so that there might be some dignity salvaged somehow for the country, some respect if not for for the parties involved, then for ourselves? A lot of what is passing for intellectual discourse and humor strikes me as being in phenomenally poor taste! Or maybe this is the way we Americans deal with things that hurt? Or embarrass us? An in yo face attitude? Anyway, back to Ammo--yesterday at practice, the coach told the team that they would be missing their 6'3' center and another of their better players in tonight's game. He turned to Ammo and said, We really need you to step up. Ammo played the entire game at point-he scored 16 points, had 14 rebounds, 10 assists, and 7 steals. He was incredible. Got the whole team involved, saw the floor, made sure everyone was in the game. Was a real leader in the best sense. Afterward, he limped up to us, his shoes in his hand. We looked down and his foot was all bloody. He hadn't told us, but had gotten blisters last week from his new game shoes, and had put bandaids and two thick pairs of socks on, hoping that would protect them. It didn't and the blisters had bled through everything into his shoe. And no one ever knew. He never complained. I guess I'm just so proud of him-not because of the numbers-they were wonderful, sure, but because he played his heart out, in pain and for the team, not just for himself. So I've been cutting dead skin off and disinfecting and now we're going to go watch a movie and eat popcorn. It was such a pleasant contrast to all the sordidness that is swirling around right now. I just wanted to share it.
