I'll have to dig through my history on my other computer but there was a really good article about impeachment - what was intended - how Senate "dissolves" and "reforms" as "jurists and jurors". There was a lot of thought put into the process and it was debated whether to sully the SCOTUS with the "political" nature of impeachment. Anyone who says it isn't political is completely unfamiliar with the process or the writing behind it. There is actually a special oath that is given to Senators to remind them of their duty to be factual, and open minded. This is not a popularity contest or an opportunity to grand-stand, but a solemn duty - perhaps (arguably) as solemn as any duty by any politician short of formals declarations of war.

The article (or others who write about the abuse of power) say McConnell wants to dismiss the charges and acquit Trump. He can do neither.
