Then we need to begin with the rules themselves.

Google, "RULES OF PROCEDURE AND PRACTICE IN THE SENATE WHEN SITTING ON IMPEACHMENT TRIALS"

Can McConnell simply vote to acquit without having a trial? No.
Can McConnell chose to not have a trial? No.
Does McConnell have any power whatsoever? No.

While it is true that the Senate can vote on many issues during the trial, assuming McConnell wins every vote is without merit since we don't know what the issues are that they'll vote on. The media makes him sound like a Senate god. He's not. Every Senator is equal during impeachment.
