Ro33, in my view, the minimum wage should only be used to set a floor for wages and to prevent egregious abuses of labor. It should NOT be set based on some arbitrary standard of a "living wage."
What do you think is fair for this type of work? Is it $5 ,$6 or $7 an hour w/o benefits?
It depends on the type of work. The free market determines what is a "fair wage." It's up to each individual worker to reconcile his or her own marketable skills with living costs and determine what is his or her own "living wage."
The big farms are subsidized but the small farmers are screwed.
Farm subsidies are stupid. Tariffs are stupid.

Both are also poor excuses for illegal immigration. In fact, they make wonderful arguments AGAINST illegal immigration. Just like higher minimum wage laws, if your regulations create holes that only illegal immigration can fill, you might want to rethink said regulations.
