More: Sprint Offers Customers Faster Access to the Internet
10:32 a.m. Jan 26, 1998 Eastern

Deployment of 3Com's 56k X2(TM) Technology to Boost

Productivity for Consumers and Businesses on the Net

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -_ Think fast! Faster
network. Faster access to critical information and communications. A
faster Internet.

It's no surprise that high-speed modems provide faster and better access
to online information, but what this boost in acceleration also means is
a significant increase in productivity for business and consumer users of
the Internet.

Sprint today announced that it would begin deploying high-speed 56
kilobits-per-second (Kbps) Internet access for its customers nationwide
in the first quarter. Faster access enables consumers to download
information, surf the Web and take advantage of the multimedia
potential of the Internet more productively. It helps home-based
businesses survive and prosper in the expanding global marketplace. For
larger businesses, high-speed access allows improved business
performance by providing up-to-the-minute online data, giving business
leaders a competitive edge in obtaining information they need to
develop value-added customer support and service.

The high-speed 56Kbps Internet access will be available in many major
cities and through a national access number in approximately 60 days.
Sprint will deploy 3Com's high-speed 56Kbps x2 technology.
Additionally, Sprint is working with 3Com to conform the 56Kbps
service to the proposed International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
standard, which will provide universal compatibility and interoperability.

"The importance of the Internet to our customers increases daily," said
Brad Hokamp, director of data services, Sprint Business. "At the same
time, the size of e-mail messages and file transfers continues to grow.
In addition, the data requirements of accessing Web pages continues to
increase as they become more graphical and information intensive. This
all adds up to the need for significantly faster access to the Internet and
Sprint is delivering on this key need for both its consumer and business
customers."

"Sprint's roll-out of x2 technology underscores our commitment to
work together to bring Sprint customers new features and faster Internet
access," said Ross Manire, senior vice president and general manager of
3Com Carrier systems. "3Com's software-based modems allow us to
deliver easy, hassle-free upgrades to our customers. This architecture
will allow 3Com to be first to market with ITU 56K standard compliant
technology."

Added Terry Parker, director of product management and development,
Sprint Consumer Internet Services, "Sprint has been instrumental in
creating the Internet and continues to implement the latest technologies
to make the online experience as productive as possible. In combination
with our other recent Sprint Internet Passport consumer enhancements
_- guaranteed access, Sprint Internet Personal Trainers, direct access to
CNET Snap! Online _- today's announcement solidifies Sprint's position
as the leader in delivering the best overall Internet experience."

Sprint customers can call 1-800-359-3900 to receive a free Sprint
