sony & fujitsu team up... <<con'd, stanley... that applies even here, when those few points represent a large % move. i wouldn't be concerned, although it is a sound rule of thumb to watch always for insider selling....>> 01/23/98- Updated 10:43 AM ET Sony, Fujitsu to make chips together TOKYO - Major electronics makers Sony Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. have agreed to develop and produce advanced microchips jointly to save development costs, officials said. The two companies will develop so-called system-on-a-chip technology that can be widely used for digital cameras and other information-related appliances, said Kazuyo Suzuki, a Sony spokesman. Under the basic agreement, a new production line will be set up at Fujitsu's plant in Mie, western Japan, with operations slated to begin in the autumn of 1999, Suzuki said. ''We want to put new technology into business use as early as possible by sharing the huge development cost for new chips,'' Suzuki said. Suzuki said the two companies are working to conclude a formal contract on the joint project by around the end of March. She said other details have yet to be decided. The Nihon Keizai newspaper reported Friday that the two companies will equally share about 100 billion yen ($787) in costs for building the new production line for the advanced microchips.
