You are missing quite a lot. Iran is a client of Russia. A client is not the same as an ally. Iran was important because it gave Russia a toehold in the ME, which it used to control but the US managed to boot them out during the 1970s. But, Iran isn't the only client they have there now. And their squabble with the US is only going to contribute to the instability there. Which means opportunity.
