John,

faced with the uncertainties of the current market picture, rather than sell your shares, which may have some concomitant short-term tax obligation, why not sell covered LEAPs? Depending, of course, upon the size of your margin position, you could cover it that way, while retaining the underlying equity for long-term capital gains purposes. This also strictly limits your potential additional growth in the stock for the term of the option. Obviously, this is only something you would consider doing if you believe in the long-term potential of the stock. If you don't think it will appreciate long-term, then of course you sell the stock.

Dellish, 3.

I agree with your assessment that Dell dropped to the low seventies during panic selling. However, since then new information has come out on Dell, and the panic is over. I don't expect Dell to be dragged down with the market to the extent it was in late October/November. Fundamentals are more important to the market, which is beginning to realize that some techs can do quite well in this environment, while others cannot.
