Multimedia Gold Rush
nikkeibp.com
Fast growing demand for multimedia systems is prompting equipment manufacturers to ramp up production. Many are riding the wave with products like graphics and sound cards, set-top boxes, CD-ROM devices, digital video disk (DVD) solutions, hardware for high-speed networks, media processors and MPEG chips.

The Asia-Pacific is viewed as a market of huge potential as multimedia, driven by the Internet vogue, rapidly gains momentum in the region. Countries like Singapore are launching immense projects to build broadband networks, while Hong Kong is pioneering video-on-demand commercial services.

Hardware and software multinationals are working on new technologies and standards vying to tap into not only the traditionally profitable markets, but also developing countries like China, by gaining an early foothold in the multimedia boom.
