On a simplistic level he was probably just playing with them - 52 is a bigger number than the 35 they threw out there. Perhaps, but that was a good number to use - A double play on words. Back then there be 52 hostages and now there B 52. Could have used the "meaning of life" - 42 - but that would have had no meaning except to laugh.
