Yesterday I took home a 10 month old purebred doberman. I am conditionally keeping him for a week or two until I decide how well he fits in and if I want to keep him. The pup is very intelligent and has good temperament. Unfortunately, he has had next to no training at all. He has spent his life in a small apartment with two other older dogs and the owner and his son, without ever meeting other dogs or going through appropriate human and dog socialization. He bears marks of staying in cage for too long (lost fur and rub marks on hind legs). The owner said he paid $2400 for him, but once he saw how good I am with the dog, offered to give him to me for free. I never understand people who just jump before they look, especially when the issue is not complicated and a quick google search will tell you all you need to know. But even free, I have to assess if I have the time to teach him the basic commands and later train him to a level that engages his mind enough. It doesn't help that he is very vocal and rambunctious (which all big puppies are). I want to save him. And I want a playmate for Meeka (that is turning out to be a perfect dog). But the wife is not very supportive :( BTW, Meeka is a good help with setting the house rules. Unfortunately, she is getting near her heat cycle...it will be a challenge. I intend to have her fixed after this cycle, and ideally I would not have another dog now. But I just felt too bad for the doberman...they are great dogs. :-/(
