BREAKING: TRUMP'S 'DESPICABLE LIES' ABOUT OBAMA ADMIN FUNDING IRAN MISSILES SHOW HIS 'WEAKNESS AND INSECURITY,' SUSAN RICE SAYS
BY CHRISTINA ZHAO ON 1/8/20 AT 5:21 PM EST
newsweek.com

Former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, who served under the Obama administration, on Wednesday condemned President Donald Trump for alleging that his predecessor provided Iran with funding that was utilized to launch missiles at U.S. targets situated in the Middle East.

As he addressed the nation this morning, Trump blamed former President Barack Obama and his administration for allegedly enacting policies that led to the currently escalating tensions between Iran and the U.S.

"Iran's hostilities substantially increased after the foolish Iran nuclear deal was signed in 2013," the president said. The Iran nuclear deal, negotiated by Obama's administration, France, Russia, Germany, China and the U.K., was actually signed in 2015.

Trump also claimed that the deal "paid for" over 20 missiles that Iran fired at American targets in Iraq this week in retaliation for the killing of top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani.

"The missiles fired last night at us and our allies were paid for with the funds made available by the last administration," he said.

In response, Rice dismissed the president's remarks as "another series of despicable lies."

"The fact that three years after taking office he remains obsessed with President Obama just shows President Trump's extreme weakness and insecurity," she said during an appearance on MSNBC, before disputing Trump's allegations against his predecessor's actions in relation to the Iran nuclear deal.

"The facts about the Iran nuclear deal are that it effectively halted and rolled back Iran's nuclear program," she said. "In the years since the signing of the deal in 2015 up until President Trump's unilateral withdrawal, abandoning our allies against the advice of his advisers, there were no proxy attacks by Iranian proxies on U.S. personnel in Iraq. There were no efforts by Iran to attack our drones in the Persian Gulf or attack shipping."
