New property. To clarify the story and to give the REAL facts (sorry David) here is the scoop. Microsoft has an Option Agreement to build as little as 600,000 or as many as 2.95 million square feet of office space at the new facility. The earliest construction could begin would be in 2001. They said that infrastructure would play a major role in deciding to build there. (They are supposed to build a link to the local expressway in the next couple of years. (Which is badly needed anyway.)) Microsoft currently has about 26,000 employees with a growth rate of about 15% or about 4,000 people per year. Of the 26,000 roughly 18,000 live and work in the Redmond area. The bottom line is that main campus is getting very crowded and they need room to grow. It is nice (and very encouraging) that they are considering major expansion in the not so distant future.
