What will be left of the Republican Party when Trump’s reign ends? Mark Jubelirer, B.A. in Philosophy from B.U. (back in the day). Trumpers will find my response repugnant. So here goes…. There is no Republican Party even now. Trump has usurped it, converted it, destroyed it. The GOP is now the Party of Trump. Trumpism is not Republicanism. It is neither conservative nor laissez-faire. Trumpism balks at tradition and consensus. Trumpism declines moderation and balanced budgets. Trumpism overturns the tables and remakes our inclinations toward global leadership among allies into a muddled and messy miscreant of nonconformity; you go your way and I’ll go mine; pay up or else. Trump’s demand that our allies (or heretofore allies) pay up or else reverses his lifelong legacy of not himself paying up or else. His personal business history is that if he does business with you, then good luck to you in seeking payments of invoices; you’ll need to see him in court, or just wash your hands of him. Yet on the global stage, he demands payments in full and a bended knee. Honor, truth, justice and the American way are ideals that go unrecognized under Trumpism. This is not a reinvention of the GOP. It is something else altogether. And we liberals are afraid that there is no status quo ante.
