The imminent threat is really not the issue. The issue was non-stop provocation by Iran against the US and our interests over there. They kept hitting us in many different ways. When they killed an American and attacked our embassy, Trump finally had enough. Trump is no Obama who will allow a country like Iran to push us around. He sent that message loud and clear.

At the end of the day, in the Middle East, there really is no negotiation. There is only strength. Now, I want us out of the Middle East as soon as possible. But as long as we are there, the best way to protect our troops is to demonstrate that we are strong and that provocations will be met with strength EVERY time. I just wish now that Trump would get us out of the ME, but that's not going to happen with Trump or any future President. You know that as well as I do. The reason is simple. The Military Industrial Complex will neutralize any President that moves too aggressively to pull our troops home from around the world. They will not let anything endanger their own corrupt feeding at the trough of military budgets. Look at how aggressively the MIC came after Trump when he started demonstrating his anti-war tendencies. Even Mattis resigned. The MIC and the Swamp are alive and well and they love the warmongering status quo.
